Immediate Source of Acquisition

Collection was acquired in 1966 by the Peale Museum. In 1997 the Peale/Baltimore City Life Museums closed due to lack of funding. Their collections were transferred to the Maryland Historical Society in 1998.

Scope and Contents

The Bureau of Recreation Photograph Collection consists of four boxes of 893 images, primarily photographic prints with a few film negatives, depicting activities sponsored by the Baltimore Bureau of Recreation, the Playground Athletic League, and the Children’s Playground Association from 1911 to 1936. The images encompass children from different ethnic and racial groups at parks, playgrounds, public schools, and public libraries engaged in various recreational and leisure time activities.

There are also two Children's Playground Association membership cards in Series XXVIII.
