Scope and Contents
Chiefly copies (by copy machine) of Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte's letters to his son JNB Jr. while he was in Europe in the French army. Includes news about his son Charles J. Bonaparte, himself (his health, interests, etc.), prominent Baltimoreans (incl. George Peabody), and the political situation in the U. S. Letters include detailed commentary on the effect of the Civil War on the economy of the U.S. (esp. Baltimore), social life in Baltimore (creation of a definite loyal-secessionist split in society), the government and Constitution (creation of a strong martial spirit), the South, and the Democratic party. Reports general war news, and the origin and development of the Union Club of Baltimore, of which he was a member. Also discusses the attitudes of Americans to the French and the British.
Also includes some commentary about JNB Jr.'s career in the French army, his troubles concerning the question of his legitimacy, etc.
Also includes copies of some letters to Gen. [John A.] Dix in relation to the purchase of a horse, the loyalty of Robert and William Gilmor of Baltimore, etc.
