Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The collection contains the correspondence and personal papers of the Moss family. Letters to Hamilton Pike Moss from family and business associates represent the bulk of the collection. The correspondence primarily discusses the health of family members and matters on the family’s farm while Moss was living in first Illinois and later Missouri. Of particular interest are documents related to the sale and transfer of an enslaved woman, Rachel, as well as an 1835 letter describing a clash between the Creek Nation and the United States Army after a series of raids in Alabama.
